Boys Village Youth and Family Services presented U.S. Senator Joseph I. Lieberman with its first annual Distinguished Service Award. The presentation was made at a formal dinner held recently at the agency's Milford campus.
At the awards dinner, Boys Village also formally installed the Rev. L. Kenneth Fellenbaum, former pastor at Grace Baptist Church in Milford, as its new chief executive officer and Douglas J. DeCerbo as its new chief operating officer.
Lieberman was honored for his "distinguished record as an advocate for children's needs," said Fellenbaum, in making the award presentation. "He has been an eloquent leader in the effort to cleanse children's television and video games of violence and other corrosive impulses, and has also been a staunch defender of children's rights and those who are in treatment."
Throughout his career in the U.S. Senate, as Attorney General for the State of Connecticut and as member of the State Senate, Lieberman has stood for basic values that are particularly crucial to children and teenagers, Fellenbaum said.
Lieberman, in accepting the award, said his own children led him to embrace the cause of cleaning up children's television and videos. He said that one night as he sat with them and saw the show they were watching, it became clear to me that some shows had exceeded the limits. He said he is involved as a parent who cares and appreciates the honor from Boys Village.
The Senator also spoke of his long friendship with Fellenbaum. "Ken Fellenbaum has always cared for his community and for families. He is the right choice for Boys Village," Lieberman said.
