After The Purge was released, it was soon announced a sequel was going to follow. I was far from enthusiastic about the first film – I was disappointed, in fact. With The Purge: Anarchy, it seems like they heard my request: they are going to show us what happens out in the world, during the Purge. Read my review of The Purge here.

Zach Gilford and Kiele Sanchez play the couple that gets stuck outside: when their car breaks down right before the annual Purge starts, they have to find a way to survive the craziest and most homocidal night of the year.

“Just remember all the good the Purge does”, Lena Heady whispers at the end of the trailer. Ah, the Purge, the idea that a free-for-all crime and murder night would solve all of America’s problems. It’s both interesting and ridiculous.

Although I enjoyed the first movie’s premise and thought it was very promising, it turned out to be merely a mediocre, we’ve seen it a thousand times before chased in your own house type horror film. It was a major letdown.

However, I’m still a little skeptic about Anarchy. Who would be so stupid to be outside, driving their car, just before the Purge begins? Maybe it’s because my predisposition leans towards paranoid in general, I’d take the day before off and make sure I wouldn’t get stuck outside just to be sure. No way I’d want to risk getting stuck outside, during the Purge.

Horror movies usually don’t really involve smart victims, though, so maybe I shouldn’t be so hard on them. I hope The Purge: Anarchy is going to show us more of the story world and how such a wild notion of a Purge could ever be legalized – in the first movies, they constantly referred to the “New Founding Fathers” and I really need to know more about them. A little background and explanation would really help increase the quality of these movies, and hopefully, DeMonaco has realized this as well.

What did you think of the first movie? What do you expect from The Purge: Anarchy? Will you see it?
