Lieberman, a popular two-term senator from New Haven, is the scheduled guest speaker when the Waterbury Black Democratic Club hosts its annual awards luncheon June 11 at 2 p.m. at the Courtyard By Marriott on Grand Street downtown.
While Waterbury's Black Democrats have an interest in a Lieberman-vs.-Giordano race, right now they're focusing on their awards luncheon, where several black Democrats will be honored by the organization.
The theme of this year's luncheon is "Honoring Those That Serve," and among those scheduled to be honored are Rep. Reginald Beamon, D-72nd District, Rev. Raymond Gatling, a city police commissioner, school board members James Murray and Joyce Petteway, and former school board members Thelma Williams and Dorothy Steward. Williams also served as town clerk while Steward is a former fire commissioner.
Alderman Larry Butler, president of the Black Democratic Club, said the organization is looking forward to Lieberman's visit.
"Senator Lieberman exemplifies the theme for the luncheon as well as any elected official in the nation," Butler said. "We're very fortunate to have him as our guest speaker."
